Levonorgestrel belongs to the family of medications known as progestins. Progestins are female sex hormones that are used in birth control pills and often in combination with the hormone estrogen.Levonorgestrel stops ovaries from releasing an egg, prevents sperm from fertilizing any eggs already released, and stops a fertilized egg from attaching itself to the womb lining.
Therefore, Levonorgestrel stops pregnancy before it is established. It does not work if you are already pregnant.
Indication:
• Emergency birth control tablet.

Cautions:

• Contraindicated in patients with vaginal bleeding.
• Contraindicated in patients with breast cancer.
• Contraindicated in a pregnant woman.
Interactions:
• Barbiturates.
• Antibiotics (ampicillin, cotrimoxazole, tetracycline, clarithromycin).
